An AI tech pack generator produces specs from what you give it, and most disappointing output traces back to a thin brief rather than a weak tool. Six inputs decide the quality of the result: product type and silhouette, fit intent, material with weight, construction detail, size range, and a reference point. Supply all six and the first draft is usually close. Supply two and you get a plausible document about a product nobody asked for. The six inputs
- Product type and silhouette. Not "a jacket" but "an unlined bomber jacket, cropped at the waist, with a ribbed hem and elasticated cuffs."
- Fit intent. Who wears it and how it should sit. "Relaxed through the body, close through the shoulder" tells the generator more than a size label does.
- Material with weight. Fibre content plus a number. "Cotton" is a guess; "320 GSM brushed-back cotton fleece, 80/20 cotton-poly" is a specification.
- Construction detail. Any join, closure or finish you care about. Flatlock versus overlock, exposed versus concealed zip, bound versus turned hem.
- Size range and base size. State the range and which size everything is measured from. Without a base size, grading has no origin.
- A reference point. A sketch, a photograph of something similar, or a garment you already own. One image resolves more ambiguity than three paragraphs.
Weak brief versus strong brief
Weak: "A nice oversized hoodie in heavyweight cotton, sizes S to XL." The output will be structurally complete and commercially useless. Oversized by how much, at which points? Heavyweight by whose standard? No base size, so the grading is invented.
Strong: "Unisex drop-shoulder hoodie, 400 GSM brushed-back cotton fleece. Body relaxed, 8 cm ease at chest over a standard fit. Kangaroo pocket, bound hem and cuffs in 2x2 rib. Flatlock shoulder seams. Sizes XS–XXL, base size M. Reference photo attached."

Five mistakes that produce unusable specs
- Adjectives instead of measurements. "Slightly cropped" is not a length. Give a number or a reference point.
- No size range. The generator will assume one, and it will not be yours.
- Mixed units. Centimetres in one line and inches in the next corrupts every grade rule downstream.
- Naming a material without a weight. The same fibre at 150 and 400 GSM is two different products.
- No construction reference. Left unspecified, finishing defaults to whatever is most common, which may be the most expensive option available.
What no brief can supply
Some fields exist outside the brief entirely. An AI tech pack generator can infer construction from a reference photo and propose tolerances from category norms, but it cannot know your shrinkage allowance after wash, your factory's preferred seam finish, or the compliance standard your market requires. The behaviour you want is a generator that surfaces these as fields to fill rather than hidden guesses, because a blank field you can see beats a plausible number you cannot check.
